FACET CHAIR
FURNITURE DESIGN
Designed by Matt Murphy in 1992, FACET began as an exploration of how a chair could be reduced to a simple cut pattern and assembled with readily available tools.
Originally presented at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, the chair received a Sunset Magazine design award that same year. Its planar construction, exposed structure and shifting geometry established a vocabulary that Murphy would return to more than three decades later.
FACET is less about a particular material or finish than the relationship between its planes — how a flat surface becomes dimensional through angle, proportion and use. Revisited today in new woods, finishes and fabrications, the original geometry remains unchanged.
